Alipore Zoo-One of the oldest zoo in Asia.

Alipore Zoo is one of the oldest zoo in not only India in Asia also. It is a main tourist attraction for Kolkata visitors. It has been open as a zoo since 1876. It covers 46.5 acres nearby National Library. Now it is claimed that the zoo is not suitable for the survivor of the wild animals around the populated area, but the government has some problem regarding decision. So the zoo is remained at the same place. It is good news for the residents of Kolkata. The zoo is best known for as the home of now expired  Aldabra Giant Tortoise Adwaita. The zoo has some breeding projects involving Manipur broweled antlered deer, asiatic lion. But the breeding is not so stable because of lack of money and instruments. The attractions are given below: Himalayan Bear, Sloth Bear, Bengal tiger, White Bengal Tiger, Jaguar, Leopard Jackal, Fishing Cat, Jungle Cat, Indian Lion, Grant's Zebra, Giraffe, Nilgai, Bengal procupine, Hippopotamus, Indian one-horned rhinocerous, Red Kangaru, Bonnet Macaque, Assamese Macaque, Common Langur, Common Marmoset, Chimpanzee, Olive Baboon, Hamadryas Baboon, Giant Squirrel, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Swamp Deer, Brow-antlered Deer, Black Buck,  and other deers from Mammals section of the zoo. The birds kept in this zoo are  Budgerigar,  Cockatiel, Moluccan Cockatoo, Bare Eyed cockatoo,Citron Crested Cockatoo,  Greater Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, Red Wattled Lapwing,Red Whiskered Bulbul, Red Vented Bulbul, Lesser Pied Hornbill,  Spot Billed Pelican, Domestic Goose,  Lesser Whistling Teal, Canadian Goose, Rosy Pelican,  Adjutat Stork, Painted Stork, White Ibis,  Quaker Parakeet,  Red Breasted Parakeet, Grey Parrot, Blue Rose Ringed Parakeet, Love Bird,  Lady Amherst’s Pheasant,  Nepal Kalij Pheasant, Golden Pheasant, Chinese Silver Pheasant, Violaceous Touraco,  Red & Blue Macaw,  Blue & Yellow Macaw, Crested Serpent Eagle, Peafowl White,  Pariah Kite,  Peafowl, Ostrich,  Spoonbill, Emu. These are the attractions from the bird section of the zoo. The reptiles of this zoo are  Long Snouted Gharial Crocodile, Indian Python, Indian Starred Tortoise, Common Krait,  Iguana,  Indian Cobra, Marsh Crocodile. These are the attraction of the zoo.

 

A. Entrance fee : a. For the zoo            :        Rs. 20 / - per person b. For the  aquarium  :        Rs. 5 / -   per person   Video Photography    :        Rs. 250 /- per hour B. Zoo  Hours : a. Ticket counters of the zoo opens at 09 – 00 a.m. and closes at 05 -00 p.m. b. The Aquarium of the zoo remain opens between 10 -30 a.m. and  05 – 00 p.m.

C. The Zoological Garden, Alipore remains closed to the visitors on every Thursday . If any holiday falls on Thursday, the garden remain opens to the visitors on that day and the weekly closure is observed on the next available working day.
